Despite seemingly limitless admonitions regarding the aging of the world's population (e.g. United Nations, 2009), research on aging and work has only recently begun to directly consider the implication of such trends on workplace processes, such as the influence of an aging workforce on work motivation. Despite recent reviews (Kooij, de Lange, Jansen, and Dikkers, 2007; Kooij et al., 2011), primary research has yet to adequately address this topic directly, and of the literature that has in some way considered age along with motivational variables, certain methodological concerns may limit our ability to effectively draw conclusions about the influence of developmental processes in later life on work motivation.
