In this chapter I will address contradictory perspectives related to old people and their engagement in the community. Some perspectives take their point of departure in the idea of the individual steadily developing their abilities, with the aim being to live in later life as an active and equal citizen. Close to it is the ideal of life-long learning. Similarly, this perspective can include the ideal of an aging community in which people's networks are organically linked and create a social capital.
